Noorama Race

Tomorrow the 1stOctober the Noorama Race takes place in Cunnamulla. The race is a special event here in Cunnamulla and it is the last one for this year.

Betting, beer, chatting, and having fun watching the races are the main activities for visitors. Also well dressed people are all around. There are competitions for the best dressed persons.

Of course expect the visitors there are the jockeys too. They have to ride the horses, trying to be the fastest. Also a lot of local people will be working, serving drinks, food and helping feeding horses getting them ready and make sure that everybody is going well.

NEWS

It’s a little quieter again after our great tour last week, but we still have a lot of activities and projects to keep on going.

Tanja, one of our German interns, is in holidays on the coast, because her parents and her sister came to Australia to visit her, which makes her of course very happy. Therefore we are a smaller staff than normal and Larissa, the second German intern will go for travel talks to Brisbane and Cairns next week, but they will come back at the 5 and 7 October.

Hopefully we have a lot of tours the next time; it’s always so much fun to meet people and to see this amazing country and all its special places. You should take the opportunity and travel to Cunnamulla in the beautiful outback!

Day 2

After we had a wonderful night in Eulo, we started on the second day at 7 o’clock in the morning!! Early, but we had a long way to go. So we went to Yowha were we got breakfast. Afterwards we were able to experience Opal cutting and opal polishing!! It was wonderful to see how they are able to form opals. We went back for morning tea before we went to the mines to find our very own opal. Some of us were really lucky and found some sparkling pieces. Lunch passed and we headed off to Cunnamulla again. Back in town the wonderful river cruise started. Sunset, a cold bottle of wine, some cheese and crackers we were absolutely happy!! At Out the Back Australia’s café and gallery we had amazing dinner with Les Capewell who showed us how to crack a wipe and told us a lot of stories. Exhausted and tiered we were driven to the caravan park where we curled in our beds.

Kayaking

In the afternoon we kayaked the Warrego River which was a real adventure. We tried not to smash our kayak against one of the trees and to be aware of the little branches hanging down from the trees. Otherwise we had to get the right direction and that was a really difficult part for us but anyway we made our way back to the bus. Exhausted and hungry we went to the café to break some opals and to have dinner with the local drover Les Capewell. He also created a absolutely delicious damper for us which we enjoyed with a lot (never mind how full we were afterwards) of butter and syrup. We crawled in our beds tiered but satisfied.

Rocky Station

Rocky Station
The next morning we had an amazing hot bath in the mineral rich artesian bore. After we packed our Swags (which was not that easy…because they were a little bit frozen), we went back to Charlottes Plains for breakfast. Then we left heading off to Rocky station. There Chris Webster guided us along the Wallaby Walk and told us a lot about her life out here. She told about the flooding for over 18 month and how they managed to get all their food and equipment over the 70 meters swinging footbridge because the car pass was flooded. Afterwards she invited us for morning tea with freshly brewed coffee, scones and jam, butter, cream and sandwiches. We also tried to play the didgeridoo and we did not act that badly.
